During the ride into town Paul berated himself for not being the protector of his family. For letting some man nearly destroy his family. What Chester has done or tried to do to Geneva was unforgivable. Unforgivable for now and forever. Coburn somehow must explain himself. When Paul finally arrived into town, he first went to the boardinghouse where Mr. Wright was staying. He asked Mr. Wright if he wouldn’t mind if the two of them went to Coburn and somehow got Coburn to explain what was going on in his mind. When they got to the place where Coburn was being held, they knocked on the door but, there was no answer. They knocked again, still there was no answer. Paul unlocked and slowly opened the door. Somehow Coburn had escaped! Paul looked wildly around the room. Just then Harrison McAllister came into the room.

Paul says,“Coburn is gone, Coburn is gone!” As though the words were just sinking into his head,“I must get home, home to Geneva.”

“Mr. Hartford, if you feel you should go home go on ahead. I will check the livery to see if any horses were stolen and see if I can determine which way Coburn headed. Mr. McAllister you should head home but alert everyone on your way that Coburn is on the loose.”

Paul rode his horse fast and hard. All Paul could think about was Geneva and his sons. Geneva was right, I should have stayed home with her and the boys. “Lord, please let everything be all right when I get home,” Paul said this in a barely audible whisper.

Geneva was inside peering out the window. Straining to hear the sound of hooves beating the ground. Finally off into the distance she heard the hooves of a horse. Maybe Paul decided to come home instead. Geneva reached for her coat and her bonnet. The night air could be deceiving. Geneva ran out to meet Paul. As Paul got closer she realized it wasn’t Paul at all. It was Chester Coburn! She turned and ran back towards the house. But it was too late. She was too far from the house. Chester scooped her up and kept riding towards the house. Chester kissed her cheek as she tried to fight him. She feared what he might do.

Abe came to the door with a shotgun in hand. The gun belonged to his father, and it was used to hunt small game. “Leavemy mother alone.” Chris came out slowly to help his mother down.“Stay right where you are, don’t make any sudden movements. Get off the horse. Get off on this side of the horse. Now!” Chester just simply raised his arm slight. Underneath his poncho he had a pistol. No one knew he had it. Paul arrived and dismounted his horse. Geneva ran to him. Paul’s lips brushed her cheek and then he immediately took the gun from Abe.

Paul said,“You three go on inside and stay away from the windows. Chester why did you come here?”

“I’m just taking what belongs to me.
